It was less like seeing than like being for the first time seen, knocked breathless by a powerful glance. The lights of the fire abated, but I’m still spending the power. Gradually the lights went out in the cedar, the colors died, the cells unflamed and disappeared. I stood on the grass with the lights in it, grass that was wholly fire, utterly focused and utterly dreamed. I saw the backyard cedar where the mourning doves roost charged and transfigured, each cell buzzing with flame. ![]() Dillard then talks of walking in the woods, “thinking of nothing at all and I saw the tree with the lights in it. One girl, upon seeing a tree for the first time, called it “the tree with lights on it”, as that’s what colors were to her: vividly aglow. She goes on to talk about the era when doctors discovered how to remove cataracts-describing the experience of blind people who could suddenly see, and how they attempted to describe what was in front of them. Hone and spread your spirit until you yourself are a sail, whetted, translucent, broadside to the merest puff.” The secret of seeing is to set sail on solar wind. In her essay titled “Seeing”, she writes: “I cannot cause light the most I can do is put myself in the path of its beam. But the stars themselves neither require nor demand it.” If, however, you want to look at the stars, you will find that darkness is necessary. How could you not fall in love with a book that says this to you: “You do not have to sit outside in the dark. Twenty minutes later I found myself deep in one essay, reading and re-reading the final page, captivated by the imagery and sentiment. I abandoned my Silver Palate quest (pasta puttanesca and lemon chicken be damned!) and sat down to flip through the pages. ![]() I picked it up and flipped it over to see that it was The Abundance by Annie Dillard-a collection of essays that I bought at the secondhand library shop for 25 cents and never opened. My hands fell upon a thick white book with a comfortable heft. Oh well! It’s good to have a task! Time to bust out the power tools.) (Just between us, I was actually searching for The Silver Palate Good Times Cookbook while also contemplating the sheer idiocy of filling my entire living room wall with unsecured glass-and-metal shelving piled with heavy books when I have a chubby baby juuust on the brink of crawling. ![]() The other day I was standing in front of the bookshelf, running my fingers over the colorful spines. It also gave me the gift of one of my favorite lines in any book, ever: “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” It reached the part of me that loves land and space and the physical world, and it used that comfortable terrain to lead me into new territory. In the case of her book, it showed me incredible writing and how to translate something wild and beautiful into words. But I can still understand why it moved me so-not unlike many formative experiences around that age, it was the newness of it, the way it simultaneously cracked open my world to become wider and spoke to something deeply familiar within me. I’ve since reread pieces of it and it surprises me how intense it is: violent and brash and deeply spiritual in a way that almost feels dark. One of the books that really affected me in high school was Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.

![]() ![]() This is one of the many reasons why natural leather is so prized by collectors and connoisseurs. In fact, most synthetic leathers will never develop a patina at all. Patina leather only gets better with age, as the natural aging process creates a protective layer that helps to safeguard the leather against spills and stains. With proper care, it can last for generations. This also indicates that the patina leather is very durable. This process is what makes patina leather so durable and long-lasting. Once the hide is tanned, it undergoes a special aging process that gives it its distinctive appearance. The hides must be free of any blemishes or imperfections and have a consistent thickness throughout. Only the highest-quality hides are used to make patina leather. The unique markings and colors that develop over time give patina leather an added dimension of depth and visual interest. The leather looks marble-like, richer, more luxurious, and more sophisticated than regular leather. When you first see patina leather, you may think it looks old and worn, but this is precisely what makes it so attractive! The signs of aging only add to the allure of patina leather. There’s no denying that patina leather has a certain rustic charm about it. By looking at a piece of patina leather, you can imagine all the adventures it has been through and the stories it could tell. This means that every piece of patina leather furniture or accessories is truly one-of-a-kind. No two pieces of patina leather will look exactly the same, as the aging process will create different patterns and colors on each hide. Still, what makes patina leather so great and so sought after? Here are some of its main qualities. Some can be quite delicate and difficult to care for, while others are practically indestructible. Unfortunately, not all patinas are created equal. Many people believe that it only gets better with time. Patina leather is highly sought after for its rich appearance and ability to age gracefully. The result is a beautiful, unique finish that adds character and depth to the leather. It is usually caused by exposure to sunlight, water, and body oils. ![]() Plus, we’ll give you some tips on how to care for your new piece! What is a Patina?Ī patina is a thin layer of sheen that forms on the surface of leather over time. We’ll discuss what patina leather is, how it’s made, and the benefits of choosing this type of furniture. The hoofs, bones, and connective tissue is boiled down until it is a gel like substance, and then allowed to cool and expand in cool water. Gelatin is made through a process that involves boiling down certain parts of the cattle. At Herb Affair, we strictly use bovine as the source of our gelatin capsules. Gelatin, which is commonly used as the base in jellies, comes from bovine (cattle) or pigs. The most notable difference is what they are each made of. By making your own supplements using gelatin or vegetarian capsules you get to control the whole process. A lot of people looking for empty capsules want to make their own supplements. Supplements are a common part of peoples lives. I made this on the stove top with soaked but not cooked beans and cooked everything as directed to start but let simmer for about an hour and a half instead. I only used two chipotle peppers but it was so hot half the family couldn't eat it. I did use less water also as others suggested. Return that to the pot, mix it all up - and you would not believe how wonderful this soup is, thick enough but still there are beans and carrots to chew on! Thank you to whoever created this delicacyĭidn't care for the flavor of this. Instead of reducing the amount of water, I take half of the quantity to my Vitamix blender and make it into a thick liquid. I cook this soup (using dry, rinsed black beans) in my Instant Pot for 42 minutes. Using the recommended 1 chipotle chili and one adobo sauce is PERFECT for our family. Ditto for my daughter and her family and untold number of her friends. The beans were perfectly soft and pureed easily once the soup was done cooking! I noted that many on here thought that 20 minutes was not enough time for the beans to become soft, so I soaked my beans overnight in salted water and bumped up the time by a few minutes. Made some modifications to this but it came out great - my first time using an instant pot! Based on other reviews I used 6 cups of liquid instead of 8 and pressure cooked for 25 minutes. I'd up to 45-50 minutes next time, or let the soup natural release for 20 minutes or so. And followed other suggestions to cook for 42 minutes. I did use about half beef broth because I had some to use up. I loved the soup and will make it again.ĭelicious, the whole family loved it. The only change I made was to omit the carrots as I don’t care for them. The soup came out perfectly with the 20 minute cooking time and use of the immersion blender. I have a small Instant Pot and so cut the recipe in half. The flavor was fantastic with the spice balanced by the sour cream. This soup was delicious, but it needed another 20 minutes in the pressure cooker (40 min. The consistency and flavour are excellent! I will definitely come back to this recipe time and again - we love it. Today I made it again and followed the recipe in terms of water, chipotles and adobo sauce while increasing the cooking time to 42 minutes and being liberal with the cumin, oregano and garlic. The group who ate loved it but it was pretty thick and kind of bland so we were adding hot salsa and extra Tabasco Chipotle to our bowls. I read the comments thoroughly and made some of the recommended adjustments. I got an Instant Pot that does air fryer and a lot of other things in addition to pressure cooking and tried this recipe about 3 weeks ago for the first time (and only the second time in my life to use a pressure cooker). Serve with lime wedges for squeezing over. Top with sour cream, corn chips, cilantro, and drained pickled onions. Using an immersion blender, purée soup in pot until smooth (or, working in batches, purée with a regular blender). Let sit, tossing occasionally, until ready to use. Meanwhile, thinly slice reserved onion and transfer to a small bowl. Taste soup and season with more salt if needed. Lock lid and cook soup at high pressure 20 minutes. Step 3Īdd chiles along with their liquid, adobo sauce, oregano, and cumin to Instant Pot and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add chopped onion, carrots, and garlic to Instant Pot, season with a big pinch of salt, and cook on Sauté, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened but haven’t taken on color, 6–8 minutes. Meanwhile, cut onion into quarters set one quarter aside. ![]() (If using a stovetop pressure cooker, cook bacon over medium-high heat.) With an app in Coda, one can have have features like shopify, quickbooks and typedream, all in one with all data synced perfectly and seamlessly, shaped however you want. With Coda everyone can tailor the use of data perfectly to suite them, and with Itsy they can have anything. The no-code approach of building apps still have alot of opinionated use on data, and the accessibility of data is still limited for the users, but Coda changed this. One thing I knew when using weweb is that the no-code era will began soon where everyone can make their perfect software themselves, only now I knew that it isn’t gonna be like I expected. ![]() And is right, the only limitation is the API is exposed, I think that would also be settled in no-time. You don’t need quickbooks, shopify, or typedream, once there’s apps like that here(and there will absolutely be. By allowing Web Apps to be built in Coda, one doesn’t need to have 2 apps to have their perfect software. What you just built filled the gaps perfectly. Also the fact that a user has to have 2 apps to build it. There’s limitation and inefficiency in that, where the app has to have another database to store the data, while also calling Coda API to transfer the data. Then I think about the frontend, the possibilities to build ontop of it, I thought there would be an app that would turn your Coda data into any shapeable frontend, and Coda would be sort of wordpress. Anyone can build anything they want and imagine using Coda. Just then I thought that this could change programming, where everyone can mutates and shape their data however they want. Coda just brought the power of relational database accessible to every person higher than my imagination. My idea was to build something where the user’s database is accessible and relatable, and that’s when I found Coda. The no-code landscape is really small, where weweb is only the reliable no-code web-app builder, where we can connect the frontend to a no-code or code backend. However, it is more common for an electric pump to generate the pressure. ![]() The act of producing a shot of espresso is often called "pulling" a shot, originating from lever espresso machines, with which a barista pulls down a handle attached to a spring-loaded piston, which forces hot water through the coffee at high pressure. Generally, one uses an espresso machine to make espresso. There is no universal standard defining the process of extracting espresso, but several published definitions attempt to constrain the amount and type of ground coffee used, the temperature and pressure of the water, and the rate of extraction. The second phase is suspended solids, while the third is the layer of gas bubbles or foam. The first dispersed phase is an emulsion of oil droplets. The three dispersed phases in espresso are what make this beverage unique. While the exact caffeine content of any coffee drink will vary, a typical 30 millilitres (1 US fluid ounce) serving of espresso contains approximately 65 milligrams of caffeine, but a typical 240 millilitres (8 US fluid ounces) serving of drip coffee contains between 150 and 200 mg of caffeine. As a result of the pressurized brewing process, the flavors and chemicals in a typical cup of espresso are very concentrated.Įspresso contains more caffeine per unit volume than most coffee beverages, but as its usual serving size of 25–30 ml (1 US oz) is much smaller than other coffee drinks, the overall caffeine content of a single serving of espresso is generally lower than that of other coffees. This is due to the higher concentration of suspended and dissolved solids, and the crema on top (a foam with a creamy consistency).
